Can CBD Help Pets?
Want to give your pets CBD but not sure where to begin? We’re here to debunk some marketing myths and let you know how safe it really is. The scoop is somewhat limited, so before you dive in just understand we’re going to give it to you straight. That’s what we do over here, family.
At the same time, we don’t want to come off negative about pets and CBD. We’re all for it, we just want to be super careful what we tell you to do with your loved ones.
That said, let’s jump right in.
Can CBD Help Pets: What Is CBD And How Does It Affect Pets?
CBD is one of many cannabinoids hemp and cannabis produce. In fact, there are around 100 of these substances that these plants use to protect themselves. They’re healing for the plant and cause humans and animals to experience a change in body chemistry.
While some of these substances cause cognitive changes (THC), the majority of them work in much more subtle ways. For instance, CBD works by influencing other substances in the body and changing how they work. It slows down the breakdown of some beneficial substances, may or may not bind weakly to CB2 receptors in the body, and promote a state of balance.
Animals definitely do have cannabinoid receptors. They have a network of these just like humans do, called an Endocannabinoid System. We don’t know a lot about cats’ receptors, but dogs actually have far more THC receptors than humans do.
Can CBD Help Pets: Is CBD Safe For Pets?
THC is NOT safe for your dog. Because of those extra receptors, a small amount of weed can pack a powerful punch to your pooch. If you know a friend who gets their dog high, that’s abusive and you should give them serious crap about it. It isn’t funny and the dog can’t consent in the first place so it’s downright rapey.
Sorry for that rant, this drives us nuts.
While there is little to no research about dogs and CBD, it appears to be safe since CBD doesn’t produce any serious side effects in humans. To be on the safe side, always use low doses of CBD with your pets if you decide to give it a try.
Can CBD Help Pets: Do You Need To Involve Your Vet?
Yeah, we think you do. Now, your vet may be extremely against this, but we encourage you to look around for one who is more open to it. They do exist and you can do some research about it online.
If you don’t have the benefit of your vet’s opinion, you have to dose blindly which is scary to us personally. Maybe you feel more comfortable doing this, but remember that the manufacturer directions could be based on nothing.
You just can’t trust what they tell you on the package.
What you can do, however, is use that as a base guideline and dose under that. Start out very small and see how your pet reacts. If you want to up the dose, do so slowly enough that you can tell how your dog is reacting.
Can CBD Help Pets: What About Cats And Other Animals
Believe it or not, most of the CBD research so far involves rats, so these animals do seem to glean some benefits from CBD treatment. There is almost no information about cats, however.
Read everything you can about people who have already given their cats CBD, and see if you can get a phone consult with any vets referenced in articles online.
There isn’t any research that says CBD will hurt your cat, but they are smaller than dogs so really go low and slow with the dose.
Can CBD Help Pets: Do You Use CBD With Your Pets?
No judgment here unless you’re blowing hits in your dog’s face. In that case, keep pushing. However, if you use CBD in your pet’s wellness regime, let us know what you think! Maybe you can give some advice to others as well. Just remember this does carry some risk and use caution before you forge ahead.
Best of luck to all your fur kids!
